Philips Bets Big on AI Healthcare in China: Innovation & Future Trends (2025)

The Future of Healthcare: AI's Impact on China's Digital Revolution

In a bold move, Philips, the renowned Dutch health technology giant, is doubling down on its commitment to AI-driven healthcare innovation in China. With the country's digital health landscape evolving at an unprecedented pace, Philips is seizing the opportunity to showcase its cutting-edge solutions at the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.

Liu Ling, the chief region leader of Philips Greater China, shared his insights with Xinhua, emphasizing the pivotal role of AI in addressing common medical system challenges. "AI is not just a trend; it's a transformative force," Liu stated. "China's innovation momentum in this field is remarkable."

As an eight-year participant in the CIIE, Philips is pulling out all the stops this year, presenting an impressive array of approximately 50 innovations. These innovations span precision diagnosis, intelligent imaging, and personal health, with standout features like their latest multi-nuclear MRI system, offering radiation-free imaging, and AI-powered consumer products, including electric toothbrushes and shavers.

"China is a unique market," Liu explained. "It's not only a hotbed for AI development but also has an urgent and diverse need for medical AI solutions." He highlighted China's impressive progress, having developed over 400 large AI models and licensed more than 100 medical AI products.

Philips' AI solutions are making waves across various healthcare sectors. From smart magnetic resonance imaging to AI-assisted hospital diagnosis and intelligent health management tools for consumers, Philips is leaving its mark. And the market growth speaks for itself. According to Frost & Sullivan, China's AI healthcare market is projected to skyrocket from 8.8 billion yuan in 2023 to a staggering 315.7 billion yuan by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of 43.1%.

But here's where it gets controversial... China's government has recently launched a nationwide "AI Plus" initiative, aiming to enhance primary healthcare services through AI-assisted diagnosis and health management. This initiative has sparked debates about the balance between technological advancement and ethical considerations in healthcare.

Philips has been an active participant in this transformation, collaborating with hospitals to implement its magnetic resonance acceleration technology. This technology triples scanning speed, reducing clinician workload and enhancing the medical experience. "Cross-disciplinary cooperation is key to unlocking the full potential of the medical ecosystem," Liu emphasized.

And this is the part most people miss... Healthcare innovation is not just about technological advancements; it's also about sustainability and environmental responsibility. Philips' Suzhou Innovation Center has developed and manufactured a 1.5-tesla MRI machine that operates without liquid helium, making it more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. This innovation has been adopted worldwide, with over 2,000 units installed.

Philips' commitment to China goes beyond the domestic market. These domestically developed solutions are now exported globally, solidifying China's position as an indispensable part of Philips' global strategy. "China is not just our second-largest market; it's a key driver of our innovation and growth," Liu affirmed.

"Truly impactful innovation is rooted in clinical practice and tailored to local health needs," Liu added, reflecting on Philips' four-decade engagement with the Chinese market. With its confidence in China's market potential, Philips aims to collaborate with local partners to build an open, collaborative, and forward-looking AI healthcare ecosystem, creating sustainable health value.
